The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

2008

Director: Mark Herman

Distributor: Miramax Films

Key Elements: Story – Characters – Message

My Review:

Based on John Boyne’s book by the same name this movie serves as another important reminder of the horror that was the holocaust.

The premise was simple. The ending was surprising. The last shot was dreadfully poetic

Artistic. Moving. Profound.

Trailer:

Quotes:
  • I'm a solider. Soldiers fight a war.
    - That's not war!
  • We're not supposed to be friends, you and me. We're meant to be enemies. Did you know that?
  • It's only a shower.

Mononoke-hime (Princess Mononoke)

1997

Director: Hayao Miyazaki

Distributor: Studio Ghibli / Miramax

My Review:

This is my second favorite Anime movie – Also from Miyazaki.

The story is about two kids who fight to protect the wild, holy forest from people who want to kill the forest god and take control of its resources.

Typical of Anime films, the themes of this story focus on the importance of respect for the environment and anti-war/anti-hate messages of peace. Both good messages.

There’s just something about this all hand-drawn movie that is just brilliant. I really enjoyed watching it.

Trailer:

Quotes:
  • In ancient times, the land lay covered in forests, where, from ages long past, dwelt the spirits of the gods. Back then, man and beast lived in harmony, but as time went by, most of the great forests were destroyed. Those that remained were guarded by gigantic beasts who owed their allegiances to the Great Forest Spirit, for those were the days of gods and of demons.
  • These days, there are angry ghosts all around us. Dead from wars, sickness, starvation, and nobody cares. So - you say you're under a curse. So what, so's the whole damn world.
  • To see with eyes unclouded by hate.
  • Huh, I didn't know the Forest Spirit made the flowers grow.
  • Look, everyone! This is what hatred looks like! This is what it does when it catches hold of you! It's eating me alive, and very soon now it will kill me! Fear and anger only make it grow faster!
  • It's over, the Forest Spirit is dead now.
    - Never. He is life itself. He is here with us now, telling us, it's time for both of us to live.
  • The Forest Spirit gives life and takes life away. Life and death are his alone.
  • Ashitaka... can you save the girl you love?

Trainspotting

1996

Director: Danny Boyle

Distributor: Miramax Films

Key Elements: Message – Visuals – Concept

My Review:

Based on Irvine Welsh’s book, Boyle’s film has a unique storytelling voice.

A Scottish heroine addict narrates his life for us, giving an inside look at the foolish, twisted, sometimes terrifying lifestyle of addiction.

A singular style on a singular issue. Good filmmaking. Disturbing effect. Like Requiem for a Dream, this movie has convinced me to never try druguse.

Trailer:

Quotes:
  • Relinquishing junk. Stage one, preparation. For this you will need one room which you will not leave. Soothing music. Tomato soup, ten tins of. Mushroom soup, eight tins of, for consumption cold. Ice cream, vanilla, one large tub of. Magnesia, milk of, one bottle. Paracetamol, mouthwash, vitamins. Mineral water, Lucozade, pornography. One mattress. One bucket for urine, one for feces and one for vomitus. One television and one bottle of Valium, which I've already procured from my mother, who is, in her own domestic and socially acceptable way also a drug addict. And now I'm ready. All I need is one final hit to soothe the pain while the Valium takes effect.
  • Personality. I mean, that's what counts, right? That's what keeps a relationship going through the years. Like heroin, I mean heroin's got a great fucking personality.
  • Take the best orgasm you've ever had... multiply it by a thousand, and you're still nowhere near it.
  • You could always get the truth from Tommy. That was one of his major weaknesses. He never told lies, he never took drugs, and he never cheated on anyone. …Begbie didn't do drugs either. He just did people.
  • Thank you, your honor. With God's help I'll conquer this terrible affliction.
  • Here I was surrounded by my family and my so-called mates and I've never felt so alone
But it's never enough. And at the moment it's nowhere near enough.
  • I don't feel the sickness yet, but it's in the post. That's for sure. I'm in the junkie limbo at the moment. Too ill to sleep. Too tired to stay awake, but the sickness is on its way. Sweat, chills, nausea. Pain and craving. A need like nothing else I've ever known will soon take hold of me. It's on its way.
  • Say something Mark… Fucking say something, huh? - I'm cooking up.
  • The downside of coming off junk was I knew I would need to mix with my friends again in a state of full consciousness. It was awful. They reminded me so much of myself, I could hardly bear to look at them.
  • This was to be my final hit, but let's be clear about this. There's final hits and final hits. What kind was this to be?
  • So why did I do it? I could offer a million answers - all false. The truth is that I'm a bad person. But, that's gonna change - I'm going to change. This is the last of that sort of thing. Now I'm cleaning up and I'm moving on, going straight and choosing life. I'm looking forward to it already. I'm gonna be just like you. The job, the family, the fucking big television. The washing machine, the car, the compact disc and electric tin opener, good health, low cholesterol, dental insurance, mortgage, starter home, leisure wear, luggage, three piece suite, DIY, game shows, junk food, children, walks in the park, nine to five, good at golf, washing the car, choice of sweaters, family Christmas, indexed pension, tax exemption, clearing gutters, getting by, looking ahead, the day you die.

Pulp Fiction

1994

Director: Quentin Tarantino

Distributor: Miramax Films

Key Elements: Concept – Lines

My Review:

Tarantino is a master of revisiting old movie genres and making them flashy and new. Here he reinvents film noir for us.

Told in a non-linear fashion, we follow several characters of the underworld as they go throughout their day. It gives us classic lines, iconic imagery and an unforgettable movie experience.

This is when the world first realized that Tarantino has style.

Trailer:

Quotes:
  • I do believe Marsellus Wallace, my husband, your boss, told you to take ME out and do WHATEVER I WANTED. Now I wanna dance, I wanna win. I want that trophy, so dance good.
  • Whether or not what we experienced was an According to Hoyle miracle is insignificant.
  • What is significant is that I felt the touch of God. God got involved.
  • We should have shotguns for this kind of deal.
    - How many up there?
    Three or four.
    - That's countin' our guy?
    Not sure.
    - So that means there could be up to five guys up there?
    It's possible.
    - We should have fuckin' shotguns.
  • I ain't saying it's right. But you're saying a foot massage don't mean nothing, and I'm saying it does. Now look, I've given a million ladies a million foot massages, and they all meant something. We act like they don't, but they do, and that's what's so fucking cool about them. There's a sensuous thing going on where you don't talk about it, but you know it, she knows it, fucking Marsellus knew it, and Antwan should have fucking better known better. I mean, that's his fucking wife, man. He can't be expected to have a sense of humor about that shit. You know what I'm saying?
  • Yeah, we cool. Two things. Don't tell nobody about this. This shit is between me, you, and Mr. Soon-To-Be-Living-The-Rest-of-His-Short-Ass-Life-In-Agonizing-Pain Rapist here. It ain't nobody else's business. Two: you leave town tonight, right now. And when you're gone, you stay gone, or you be gone. You lost all your L.A. privileges. Deal?
  • The night of the fight, you may feel a slight sting. That's pride fucking with you. Fuck pride. Pride only hurts, it never helps.
  • The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
  • That's when you know you've found somebody special. When you can just shut the fuck up for a minute and comfortably enjoy the silence.
  • I'm American, honey. Our names don't mean shit.
  • Get it straight buster - I'm not here to say please, I'm here to tell you what to do and if self-preservation is an instinct you possess you'd better fucking do it and do it quick! I'm here to help - if my help's not appreciated then lotsa luck, gentlemen.

Kill Bill Vol.II

2004

Director: Quentin Tarantino

Distributors: Miramax Films

Key Elements: Concept – Visuals – Characters

My Review:

The second installment of Tarantino’s homage to the Samurai genre reveals the mysteries of the first.

My favorite part is when Bill waxes poetic about the assumptions presented in the Superman mythology. Very interesting.

There’s talk that a third movie might be made in which Vernita Green's daughter seeks revenge against Beatrix’s.

Trailer:

Quotes:

  • I tried to tell him... “Bill, she's just smart for a blonde."
  • As you know, l'm quite keen on comic books. Especially the ones about superheroes. I find the whole mythology surrounding superheroes fascinating. Take my favorite superhero, Superman. Not a great comic book. Not particularly well-drawn. But the mythology... The mythology is not only great, it's unique. Now, a staple of the superhero mythology is, there's the superhero and there's the alter ego. Batman is actually Bruce Wayne, Spider-Man is actually Peter Parker. When that character wakes up in the morning, he's Peter Parker. He has to put on a costume to become Spider-Man. And it is in that characteristic Superman stands alone. Superman didn't become Superman. Superman was born Superman. When Superman wakes up in the morning, he's Superman. His alter ego is Clark Kent. His outfit with the big red "S", that's the blanket he was wrapped in as a baby when the Kents found him. Those are his clothes. What Kent wears - the glasses, the business suit - that's the costume. That's the costume Superman wears to blend in with us. Clark Kent is how Superman views us. And what are the characteristics of Clark Kent. He's weak... he's unsure of himself... he's a coward. Clark Kent is Superman's critique on the whole human race. Sorta like Beatrix Kiddo and Mrs. Tommy Plimpton.
  • Pai Mei taught you the five point palm-exploding heart technique? …No. You're not a bad person. You're a terrific person. You're my favorite person, but every once in a while, you can be a real cunt.
  • The lioness has rejoined her cub, and all is right in the jungle.

Kill Bill

2003

Director: Quentin Tarantino

Distributor: Miramax Films

Key Element: Concept – Visuals

My Review:

The color, motion and attitude of this movie is all that needs to be said for it.

Tarantino, a master of genre remodeling, takes the classic samurai film genre and, shrouding his story in mystery, dresses it up with a blonde.

Very stylish.

Trailer:

Quotes:

  • Wiggle your big toe.
  • That woman deserves her revenge and we deserve to die.
  • So, O-Ren? Any more subordinates for me to kill?
  • You didn't think it was gonna be that easy, did you?
    - You know, for a second there, yeah, I kinda did.
  • One more thing, Sofie... is she aware her daughter is still alive?

Good Will Hunting

1997

Director: Gus Van Sant

Writers: Matt Damon / Ben Affleck

Distributor: Miramax Films

Key Element: Lines – Characters

My Review:

So Ben Affleck and Matt Damon got together and decided to write a movie. And the first thing Damon said was, “I want to be a genius.” And that is what they built their story around.

And somehow, what they created was some of the best writing I’ve seen in a movie. They create compelling personal tension within Will’s character. And there are lines that move. Sean’s delivery of what really matters in life could stand alone as an argument for not judging others.

Just all around, a great movie.

Clip:

Quotes:

  • Do you like apples? …Well I got her number. How do you like them apples?
  • What is your obsession with this money? My father died when I was 13 and I inherited this money. You don't think that every day I wake up and wish I could give it back? That I would give it back in a second if I could have one more day with him? But I can't, and that's my life and I deal with it.
  • If you ever disrespect my wife again, I will end you. I will fucking end you. You got that, chief?
  • My father was an alcoholic. Mean fuckin' drunk. Used to come home hammered, looking to wail on someone. So I had to provoke him, so he wouldn't go after my mother and little brother. Interesting nights were when he wore his rings.
    - …He used to just put a belt, a stick, and a wrench on the kitchen table and say, "Choose."
I’d have to go with the belt.
-…I used to go with the wrench.
    Why?
    - Cause fuck him, that's why.
  • It’s not your fault
  • No. No, no no no. Fuck you, you don't owe it to yourself man, you owe it to me, 'cause tomorrow I'm gonna wake up and I'll be 50, and I'll still be doin' this shit. And that's all right. That's fine. I mean, you're sittin' on a winnin' lottery ticket. You're too much of a pussy to cash it in, and that's bullshit. 'Cause I'd do fuckin' anything to have what you got. So would any of these fuckin' guys. It'd be an insult to us if you're still here in 20 years. Hangin' around here is a fuckin' waste of your time.
  • You're not perfect sport, and let me save you the suspense, this girl you've met she's not perfect either. But the question is whether or not you're perfect for each other.
  • So if I asked you about art, you'd probably give me the skinny on every art book ever written. Michelangelo, you know a lot about him. Life's work, political aspirations, him and the pope, sexual orientations, the whole works, right? But I'll bet you can't tell me what it smells like in the Sistine Chapel. You've never actually stood there and looked up at that beautiful ceiling; seen that. If I ask you about women, you'd probably give me a syllabus about your personal favorites. You may have even been laid a few times. But you can't tell me what it feels like to wake up next to a woman and feel truly happy. You're a tough kid. And I'd ask you about war, you'd probably throw Shakespeare at me, right, "once more unto the breach dear friends." But you've never been near one. You've never held your best friend's head in your lap, watch him gasp his last breath looking to you for help. I'd ask you about love, you'd probably quote me a sonnet. But you've never looked at a woman and been totally vulnerable. Known someone that could level you with her eyes, feeling like God put an angel on earth just for you. Who could rescue you from the depths of hell. And you wouldn't know what it's like to be her angel, to have that love for her, be there forever, through anything, through cancer. And you wouldn't know about sleeping sitting up in the hospital room for two months, holding her hand, because the doctors could see in your eyes, that the terms "visiting hours" don't apply to you. You don't know about real loss, 'cause it only occurs when you've loved something more than you love yourself. And I doubt you've ever dared to love anybody that much. And look at you... I don't see an intelligent, confident man... I see a cocky, scared shitless kid. But you're a genius Will. No one denies that. No one could possibly understand the depths of you. But you presume to know everything about me because you saw a painting of mine, and you ripped my fucking life apart. You're an orphan right? You think I know the first thing about how hard your life has been, how you feel, who you are, because I read Oliver Twist? Does that encapsulate you? Personally... I don't give a shit about all that, because you know what, I can't learn anything from you, I can't read in some fuckin' book. Unless you want to talk about you, who you are. Then I'm fascinated. I'm in. But you don't want to do that do you sport? You're terrified of what you might say. Your move, chief.
  • People call those imperfections, but no, that's the good stuff.
  • Every day I come by your house and I pick you up. And we go out. We have a few drinks, and a few laughs, and it's great. But you know what the best part of my day is? For about ten seconds, from when I pull up to the curb and when I get to your door, cause I think, maybe I'll get up there and I'll knock on the door and you won't be there. No goodbye. No see you later. No nothing. You just left. I don't know much, but I know that.

The Four Feathers

2002

Director: Shekhar Kapur

Distributor: Paramount Pictures / Miramax Films

Key Elements: Visuals – Message

My Review:

I was journaling a lot about the virtue of selflessness when I saw this movie. I found essentially an extended illustration of selfishness.

Harry leaves the army and his friends immediately abandon him. But when he realizes the danger his friends are going into, he decides to follow and help them. Though the explicitly stated reason for his doing so is that he wants to redeem himself, everything he does reads more like a desire to protect those he loves.

This is an illustration of the gospel. Jesus was betrayed by everyone - all of us. Yet he gave up everything he had and sacrificed Himself - even taking our place - to save us. That's what Harry does for his friends.

The most moving scene for me is when, even after going into battle to save a friend, Harry goes into prison to save another who has been captured. The scene when he walks alone toward the prison and surrenders himself to the guards who ride out to him is especially powerful.

Note: I love heath ledger’s hair at the end of this movie.

Trailer:

Quotes:

  • Don't worry, Vicar. They're only women. They won't bite.
  • I've left the army.
  • Feathers of cowardice.
  • When something like this happens you are lost. You don't know who you are anymore and what you're capable of. Unless I do something, this is always how people will remember me. A feather. And that is how I will always see myself: a coward. All I know is that I can't live with myself like this.
  • How differently I’d do things given a second chance.
  • Why is it so important to follow them… your friends?
    - To help them. If I can.
  • God put you in my way.
  • I found you half dead crossing the desert alone and you say you are afraid?
  • I was a fool to think that I could ever go home. I can’t.
  • The shame is no longer yours. You’re responsible to yourself and to God. Not to them.
    - I am responsible to my friend! I will find him.
  • You have learned nothing. You have done enough.
    - It’s never enough Abu.
  • I will not be responsible for your death!
    - How could you be responsible for my death? ..I would die if it is God’s will, yes?
  • You Englishmen walk too proudly on the earth! …You are a fool. …my friend.
  • I have nothing left to lose. Nothing left to live for. Still, I’m afraid.
    - Fear always remains.
  • Pray for me Abu. Take as long as you like. …I don’t walk to proudly now.
  • How many bullets?
    - One
    Better make it count.
  • What will you do now?
    - Whatever God has chosen for me

The Crow

1994

Director: Alex Proyas

Distributor: Miramax Films

Key Element: Concept – Visuals – Symbolism

My Review:

Based on James O'Barr's comic book, The Crow is possibly the ultimate Goth movie.

A crow enables a slain man to return to the world as an indestructible wraith so he can enact justice upon the ones who raped and killed his girlfriend before killing him.

If we were to find a hint of the gospel in the story, it would be the Resurrection. Satan figured he had won until Jesus rose again and took total control. In similar fashion, Eric returns from death and overthrows those who that they had him conquered.

Part of the movie's popularity comes from the fact that its star, Brandon Lee tragically died during filming due to a gun-blank mishap. This story made the already eery movie even darker.

Trailer:

Quotes:

  • People once believed that when someone dies, a crow carries their soul to the land of the dead. But sometimes, something so bad happens that a terrible sadness is carried with it and the soul can't rest. Then sometimes, just sometimes, the crow can bring that soul back to put the wrong things right.
  • Abashed the Devil stood and felt how awful goodness is.
  • Can't rain all the time...
  • You shouldn't smoke these. They'll kill you.
  • Little things used to mean so much to Shelly- I used to think they were kind of trivial. Believe me, nothing is trivial.
  • If the people we love are stolen from us, the way to have them live on is to never stop loving them. Buildings burn, people die, but real love is forever.
