The Descent

2005

Director: Neil Marshall

Distributors: Pathe / Lionsgate

Key Elements: Concept – Visuals

My Review:

Simplicity is sometimes key when it comes to making a good horror movie. When I heard a movie was coming out about six hot British chicks spelunking, I knew it was something I wanted to see.

And this movie delivers exactly what it should: suspense, chills, shocks, and survival. It’s a thrill when Sara stops being scared and starts fighting back. And The camera work artfully heightens spelunking’s sense of claustrophobia.

But the scariest thing about the movie is not what the women find in the caves. It’s what Sara must live with once she is out – a final shot gives us a hint that she will be forever haunted by what she had to do to survive.

This movie delivers.

Interesting note: The movie poster is inspired by Philippe Halsman's portrait of Salvador Dali.

Quotes:

  • I'm an English teacher, not fucking Tomb Raider.
  • It hasn't got a name. It's a new system. No one's ever been down here before. I wanted us all to discover it!
  • So, this isn't caving. This is an ego-trip!
  • Hey, there's something down here…
