This is a very simple premise: A daughter on vacation gets kidnapped by the sex trade. Her former CIA agent father comes to rescue her.
I think the mere fact that Liam Neeson’s in the lead makes this movie work. It’s cool seeing an older guy taking names. It’s also cool seeing dirt bags get what coming to them.
But what I appreciate most about this movie is how it draws attention to the sex trade – a very real, very hidden problem worldwide – even in the states.
If there's a gospel element in this movies - It is in the love of a father for his child. He's willing to make every sacrifice to ensure she is saved.

This is a classic.
Based on William Goldman’s book, this comedic melodrama is incredibly quotable. It also accomplishes the rare feet of being both hilarious and clean.
And I love that Fred Savage plays the kid being told the story.

Based loosely on the book by Lauren Weisberger, this is the story of a college graduate who accepts a job as an assistant to a Fashion Magazine Editor in Chief. Though the job is coveted by many, Andy just wants to remain unaffected and receive a pay check. But her resolve wanes as she gets better at the job. Soon her friends are noticing a change in her.
The message of the movie is about being authentic and not selling out.
Along the way, we get to enjoy seeing how these characters, equally profound and goofy, interact.

My Review:
I grew up on oldies so when this movie came out, I was stoked. Amazingly all the original songs in the movie SOUND like they belong to the time they were written for. Well done.
Also, I had a huge crush on Liv Tyler’s character, Faye – so that helped my enjoyment of the film.
The story tracks a band as it goes from garage obscurity to wild success to an ultimate breakup. It’s a great ride along the way as we get to know the characters – Lenny’s quips especially are hysterical.
But the message of the movie comes from the interesting juxtaposition between Jimmie and Guy.
Jimmie is truly talented and we are told he goes on to be wildly successful in the music industry. He is driven, but his drive leaves him, in the end, alone and unhappy.
Guy on the other hand is also talented, but he is less driven. His interest is not for the success, but for the music itself. We see his genuine love for the music throughout - from his late night solo drum sessions to his awe of meeting and jamming with his idol, soulful Jazz musician Dell Paxton. Though Guy finds some success as a musician, it never matches Jimmie’s. All the same, in the end, Guy is in love and happy.
The message is about being genuine and not selling out. Jimmie was a sell out – though he got what he thought he wanted, he wasn’t happy. Guy on the other hand was genuine, and he got everything he wanted – the music AND the girl.
Interesting note: The film’s fictional record company, Playtone, became the name of Tom Hank’s production company after this film was made.

I had trouble getting into this movie at first. It played out like a violent revenge movie. But then I saw the ending.
One of the greatest gospel illustrations I’ve ever seen in a movie.
Pieta is being held by her kidnappers. To get her back to her mother, Creasy trades himself and takes her place. The two meet at the top of an overpass where the exchange is taking place. Creasy tells her he loves her and then goes on toward his death.
I was in tears seeing this scene. We are all like Pieta, dangerously and helplessly trapped by sin and death. Then Jesus, like Creasy, gives His life in our place so we can live free. Incredibly moving, this scene alone makes this one of my favorite movies.
Also, we see Creasy struggle with his faith, but by the end of the movie we get the message that He has made peace with God.

It’s one of the best movie illustrations of the Gospel I’ve seen.
Rose is trapped in an engagement that is destroying her but compelling her to stay. In despair, she wishes for death. She is like all of us trapped in sin – leading to death.
But then Jack shows up. He’s poor, but his spirit is free. He gives her the strength to imagine a different life. In the end, he gives up his life to save her, allowing her to go on to live a new life with beautiful experiences.
Jack is the Christ-figure of the story. He sacrifices himself and not only frees her from her bad situation, but leads her into a better one. It’s similar to how Christ sacrificed himself to free us from sin and lead us into abundant life.
Visually stunning. Musically moving. And a story that reflects THE story. Completely great movie.

Malick’s flow of consciousness storytelling style gives us a glimpse into the broken psyche of men fighting the WWII pacific war.
My favorite character is Whit, the main character. Despite all the darkness surrounding him, he holds onto his belief in a “Great Light” – what I take to be God – and continues to see beauty all around him. It’s this faith that gives him peace when all is lost.

In the spirit of the Twilight Zone, this movie keeps you guessing until the very end.
Sam is trying to help his newest patient Henry, who is planning to commit suicide. Henry, brooding and tormented, talks of the guilt he feels for something he has done, his desire for the girl he loves and the agony of seeing his parents though they are dead.
You won’t pick up on it the first time you watch it, but the movie’s resolution is creatively foreshadowed with loaded imagery throughout.
A thoughtful and artistic movie - Always an incredible watch.

My Review:
The conclusion of the Star Wars story. Lucas would later make three prequels, but they amounted to little more than lame attempts to resurrect the franchise. The story is complete in the original trilogy.
It wasn’t until I was older that I picked up on the meaning of Luke’s final fight against Vader. Luke resists the temptation to kill his father. And Vader overcomes his own darkness to defeat the Emperor. With tension on multiple levels, there’s as much inner struggle here as there is violent struggle.
And of course, we love the speeder bikes and Ewoks on Endor.

A continuation of the Space-age fairytale. More great writing. More great special effects.
To me, the most interesting part is when Yoda is training Luke. There’s a part where Luke goes into the forest alone. He encounters and fights a vision of Darth Vader. When he wins the fight, the mask falls to reveal, not Vader’s face, but Luke’s. I thought it was an interesting statement about spiritual warfare. The reformation theologians identified three enemies the Christian faces in life: The forces of evil, the foolishness of the world, and the betrayal of the flesh – the flesh can sometimes be the most difficult to battle. We must conquer our inner demons and gain self-control before we can be of any use in the wider fight.

My Review:
This film is movie history.
Lucas broke major ground with his special effects and a story that echoed elements of classic mythology – making this movie of universal appeal.
An evil has taken power. A boy is forced into the role of rebel fighter. A knight comes out of retirement to be his mentor. A princess needs rescuing. A maverick joins the fight. Everything you need for a great fairytale, only this story takes place in outer space.
The best thing about these movies, and perhaps why they were so popular, is that they aren’t just sci-fi. A lot of sci-fi movies have a science premise and then become nothing more than action-adventure movies. But the Star Wars movies are actually movies about humanity, simply placed in a sci-fi setting.
In these early movies, it was still possible to interpret the Force as God – making the hero’s struggle a spiritual one.
If there’s an element of the gospel here, it’s when Obi Won surrenders his life to Darth Vader, enabling him to become an even more powerful help to Luke. It’s similar to how Jesus surrendered his life to give us new life.
